After updating your system with Red Carpet, you may find there is still some software you need that was not installed. That happens because Red Carpet will only update software packages that are already installed. The cool thing is, if you want to install more software packages, you can use Red Carpet to find and install them. Here's what you do.

Red Carpet 2.0

Installing from a Red Carpet server

  1. Start Red Carpet
  2. Click on the Search tab
  3. Set the Channel to "All Channels"
  4. In the search text field, type in the name of the package or phrase that describes the software.
  5. You will see a list of packages that satisfy your search. You can select packages to install by clicking in the Action column.
  6. Once you have selected all the packages you want to install, click on [Run Now] in the tool-bar.
  7. You will see a list of packages that will be installed including dependencies of the packages you requested to be installed. If this list is acceptable, click on [Continue].
  8. The packages will be installed. Click on [OK] when Red Carpet reports that it is done.

Installing from local media

A single package:

  1. Start Red Carpet.
  2. Click on File -> Install from file... and choose the file in the file chooser dialog.
  3. Click on [Run Now].
  4. You will see a list of packages that will be installed including dependencies of the packages you requested to be installed. If this list is acceptable, click on [Continue].
  5. The packages will be installed. Click on [OK] when Red Carpet reports that it is done.

Multiple packages from a directory:

  1. Start Red Carpet.
  2. Click on File -> Mount Directory.... You will need to name the channel and specify the directory then click [OK].
  3. Click on [Channels] and check the box beside the Channel of the mounted directory and click [OK].
  4. To see the packages in the mounted directory, click on the Available Software tab.
  5. Once you have selected all the packages you want to install, click on [Run Now] in the tool-bar.
  6. You will see a list of packages that will be installed including dependencies of the packages you requested to be installed. If this list is acceptable, click on [Continue].
  7. The packages will be installed. Click on [OK] when Red Carpet reports that it is done.
  8. If you have packages on local media, like a cdrom or on your hard-drive, make sure the media or directory is mounted.

Red Carpet 1.x

Installing from a Red Carpet server:

  1. Start Red Carpet
  2. Subscribe to the channel in which the software belongs buy clicking on [Unsubscribed], then clicking on the channel name, and finally clicking on [Subscribe].
  3. Click on [Subscribed].
  4. Click on the channel of the software.
  5. In the search text field, type in the name of the package or phrase that describes the software.
  6. You will see a list of packages that satisfy your search. You can select packages to install by clicking on the check-box beside the package you want to be installed.
  7. Once you have selected all the packages you want to install, click on [Install].
  8. You will see a list of packages that will be installed including dependencies of the packages you requested to be installed. If this list is acceptable, click on [Continue].
  9. The packages will be installed. Click on [OK] when Red Carpet reports that it is done.
