Scanning for Latest Versions of Symantec AntiVirus Software using Inventory in ZENworks Desktop Management

This cool solution helps you to enable scanning for latest versions of Symantec AntiVirus Software by the ZENworks Desktop Management Inventory Scanner.

You can use the information in this document to get the latest Symantec AntiVirus software scanned and reported, till support for the same is available in the next Patch release or Support Pack release of the product.

The complete list of Anti Virus Software scanned by the ZENworks Inventory scanner can be found in the online documentation for ZENworks 7 and ZENworks 6.5.

The latest version supported in ZENworks Desktop Management 7 and in ZENworks Desktop Management 6.5 SP2 for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is version 10.0.

The Inventory Component in ZENworks Desktop Management 7 and ZENworks Desktop Management 6.5 SP2, collects software information from the following sources on the inventoried workstation: Microsoft Installer (MSI), Add-Remove Programs, Dictionary-based scan, and Probe. For the Virus Definition information, namely the version and the date, additional data needs to be probed based on the Vendor.

To enable scanning for the Virus Definition Version and Date for the latest version of Symantec Antivirus, you would have to do the following steps. This will also enable the Software to be reported as Anti-Virus software.

Note: For all Windows registry access, you can use Regedit.exe. Please use this tool only for reading registry entries.

I - Gather information regarding Symantec Antivirus product on the workstation

a) Find out the Registry entry for the latest version of Symantec.
The entry for Symantec AntiVirus can be found in the following Registry path:
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Symantec is registered with the key which is usually of the form
{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}

For example, Symantec AntiVirus 10 has the key {5A633ED0-E5D7-4D65-AB8D-53ED43510284}

b) Find if the Registry entry "AVENGEDEFS" is present in the following Registry path \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\InstalledApps

If you have found the key as mentioned in (a) and you have also verified the key as mentioned in (b), you have completed half your task. You will have to now update this entry in a file and move it to the workstations to complete the task.

II - Configure ZENworks Inventory component to scan for Symantec Antivirus information

Inventory Scanner on the inventoried workstation uses a file called, AntiVirusProducts.ini to collect Virus definition information. This file is installed as a part of the ZENworks Desktop Management Agent installation and can be found in C:\Program Files\Novell\ZENworks\Inventory folder.

Edit this file using any editor, like notepad.exe or wordpad.exe.
Add the following entries to the file.
[{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}]
PRODUCT=SYMANTEC
REG_KEY_INSPATH=SOFTWARE\Symantec\InstalledApps
REG_VAL_INSPATH=AVENGEDEFS

where {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX} is the key found in step (a). Please note there is a '[' and a ']' before and after the key.

Update this on a single workstation and send a scan to check if the new Virus Definition Version and Date is getting reported correctly. If yes, you can then distribute this file to all your workstations to get the latest data scanned. The same solution is applicable for Norton and Symantec Norton series of Antivirus products as well. Refer to the product documentation for the base versions which we support.

Note:
Any updates to the scanner will overwrite the AntiVirusProducts.ini file. To ensure that you do not lose the data, you can inform Novell Technical Support if you need the latest version to be scanned as a part of the ZENworks Desktop Management product. This will ensure that even if you do update the scanner, you will still have the latest AntiVirus scanned.
