Overview

Created in 1934, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) plays a variety of roles in Central Texas: delivering electricity , managing the water supply and environment of the lower Colorado River basin, developing water and wastewater utilities, providing public recreation areas and supporting community and economic development.

LCRA serves 53 counties in Texas and employs 2,300 people, 200 of whom required GroupWise wireless email access. LCRA's Data Security Office, supervised by Michael Allgeier, conducted a thorough investigation of several GroupWise wireless email solutions based on security standards, cost of acquisition, ease of installation and breadth of mobile devices supported.

Following this investigation, Omni Mobile was presented to the Business Unit account managers and IT management with the recommendation to purchase and implement the product.

The Challenge

"Wireless access is a scary subject to those of us charged with keeping the data assets of the LCRA safe," said Mr. Allgeier. "Think about it - you just stick an antenna up in the air and broadcast data. You don't know who is going to use it or how. Even before our mobile employees (we have over 200 of them) began to consider wireless access, we were looking for a method to deliver GroupWise wireless email to them."

LCRA's Data Security Office set up standards by which several GroupWise mobile solutions would be tested, including:

  • Mobile security: Would the login process and data being broadcast from the device or confines of LCRA be strongly encrypted?
  • Cost of acquisition: What is the total cost of ownership of the GroupWise wireless email solution (server hardware, server and database software, patching and maintenance, backups, anti-virus and time to install and support)?
  • Ease of installation: Would the GroupWise wireless email solution leverage our existing GroupWise investment or add additional complexities and hardware requirements to our systems? Is it simple to install, administer and use for administrators and users?
  • Breadth of mobile devices supported: Would the GroupWise wireless email solution support multiple wireless PDA and Smart Phone platforms (e.g., Palm, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 5, Sony Ericsson, Nokia Series 60).

The Solution

Following Mr. Allgeier's investigation of several GroupWise mobile solutions, he determined that Omni Mobile from Omni Technology Solutions presented the strongest fit for LCRA's business and security requirements.

"LCRA's IT/Technical Operations department tested the operational feasibility of Omni Mobile in November and December 2005," said Mr. Allgeier. "The department determined Omni Mobile was a solution they could easily support. We also found Omni's technical support to be responsive and professional."

The Results

LCRA began deploying Omni Mobile in April 2006 and continues to increase the number of users with GroupWise wireless email access. "Our users have found Omni Mobile to be very useful, and our IT department has found Omni Mobile to be an effective, secure, and easily managed product."
