WALTHAM, Mass. - November 15, 2006 - Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of software compliance management solutions, today shipped protexIP/development 4.0, the newest release of its flagship offering. The major upgrade, announced in September 2006, boasts a new graphical interface and improved workflow to boost user productivity, as well as enhanced code-matching technology. In related news, Black Duck also announced the shipment of the protexIP/sdk (software development kit), which allows tighter integration of protexIP into customers' computing environments. Taken together, the new features, usability enhancements and SDK underscore Black Duck's technology lead and illustrate its continuing emphasis on innovation.

protexIP allows large enterprises, technology product companies and outsourcers engaged in geographically distributed software development to know the contents of their software code and therefore to help ensure compliance with open source and proprietary licenses alike. It streamlines workflow to allow teams of software developers, architects and lawyers to collaborate to protect software intellectual property (IP) and integrates into corporate software development environments that include source code management systems and integrated development environments (IDEs).

Douglas Levin, CEO of Black Duck Software, commented: "Both the software industry and large enterprises understand the benefits of using proprietary, open source and third-party software. But companies have to understand which components are in their code and at the same time respect license terms. Together, protexIP 4.0 and our new SDK provide the most comprehensive solution for knowing what's in a code base and if the license requirements are right. We think these product introductions will make major market inroads among all types of software developers in the fourth quarter of 2006 and into 2007."

Black Duck's protexIP platform creates a new work environment that helps organizations effectively manage their increasingly complex software IP and licensing issues. By validating software contents, finding issues to be addressed early in the development cycle or well in advance of a due diligence event, and verifying license compliance, the protexIP platform helps companies reduce business risks, complete software projects on time and on budget and stay on track with their business plans.

The protexIP/sdk provides companies the ability to tightly integrate license compliance management into their existing development lifecycle and with their existing development tools, such as configuration management and build systems. The SDK is available for customers to use for integration, or Black Duck Software's professional services team can provide custom integration.

protexIP is available from Black Duck Software and its resellers in Asia, Europe and Australia. In the U.S., protexIP/development Enterprise Edition is priced starting at $25,000; protexIP/development Professional Edition is priced starting at $9,500. protexIP/sdk is priced starting at $10,000 and requires a base protexIP/development subscription.
