The American National Standards Institute ( coordinates the development and use of voluntary consensus standards in the United States and represents the needs and views of U.S. stakeholders in standardization forums around the globe. Comprised of government agencies, organizations, companies, academic and international bodies, and individuals, the Institute represents the interests of more than 125,000 companies and 3.5 million professionals.


The ANSI staff was spending hundreds of hours each month manually updating user information across its systems, a time-consuming process that often resulted in inaccurate data for both internal and external users. Centralizing and automating identity management would not only improve data accuracy, but would also free up IT and non-IT support staff time.

In addition, ANSI manages a large number of documents pertaining to its work with hundreds of standards development organizations. The Institute has more than 2,500 users who access tens of thousands of documents from its SharePoint* portal. These users often needed multiple passwords to access information. ANSI wanted to simplify data access by giving its users single sign-on access to information, based on their level of membership.

Novell Solution

ANSI evaluated identity management solutions from several other vendors before selecting a Novell identity and security solution consisting of Novell eDirectoryTM and Novell Identity Manager.

"We chose a Novell solution because it's like an octopus - it's based on a solid directory, integrates with the widest range of products, and ties all our systems together," said Michael Petosa, director of IT for the American National Standards Institute.

Using Novell eDirectory as a central repository for user identity information, ANSI has integrated four disparate data sources including Microsoft* Active Directory*, SharePoint portal and its IMIS contact management system.

Novell Identity Manager automatically synchronizes user identity information for its customers across all connected systems using a single ID and password. Along with improved data accuracy, ANSI also saves more than 100 hours a month of manual entry and updating. The solution automatically checks for errors and inconsistencies, and sends notifications to IT when necessary.

"Our business relies on contact information, so having accurate user data is essential," said Petosa. "Our Novell identity management solution helped us create a central repository of accurate user information for our valued constituents. Having a single point of user management greatly reduced both IT and non-IT administration time."


By implementing a Novell identity management solution, ANSI has reduced the time spent on manual user provisioning by 90 percent, making more efficient use of its human resources. The organization has reduced the number of password resets for both its staff and members by 80 percent, dramatically improving user access to information.

Centralizing identity management has improved data accuracy and helps the organization protect the private information of each of its members. The company estimates that its Novell solution will pay for itself in two years.
