Introduction

This article is intended for the administrators / users of Netware and OES. It is also helpful for administrators / users who are trying to migrate data from a NetWare 5.1 SP8 server to OES, as migration requires eDirectory 8.7.3.6 at a minimum on the source server.

The goal is to upgrade eDirectory on Netware 5.1 Support Pack Revision 08, (NW51SP8) from NDS Version 8.85c to eDirectory 8.7.3.7.

Prerequisites

  • Netware 51SP8 server
  • Windows machine with Novell client installed
  • Network connectivity

Upgrade Stages

  • I. Upgrade eDirectory on the Netware server from NDS8.85C to eDirectory
  • 8.7.3
  • II. Upgrade eDirectory from 8.7.3 to 8.7.3.7
  • III. Upgrade NICI to 2.6.8
  • IV. Do a Security Update
  • V. Update the NDS schema if needed

I. Upgrade the eDirectory on the Netware server from NDS8.85C to eDirectory 8.7.3

When NW51SP8 is installed, by default we get NDS installed. When you type VERSION on the server console it gives NDS Version 8.85c Dec. 19,2003.

The following steps will guide you in upgrading NDS 8.85c to eDirectory 8.7.3.7.

Important: eDirectory cannot be upgraded directly to 8.7.3.7. It requires a base version, such as eDirectory 8.7.3, to be running. So, first you need to upgrade the NDS 8.85c to base version 8.7.3, and then to 8.7.3.7.

1. Download eDirectory 8.7.3 from http://osg-dt-1/Builds/eDirectory/873 to the NetWare server. For example, download to SYS:\. The file is eDir_873_nw_full.exe.

2. Expand the file. Using windows client, map the sys volume and run the exe file. It creates a directory and places subdirectories and files there.

3. At the server console, start NWCONFIG.NLM. (type NWCONFIG).

4. Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed.

5. Press F3 and specify the path to the expanded Support Pack files, such as SYS:\EDIR873\NW.

6. Follow the online instructions to install. Proceed through the warning messages.

Note the following:

  • The Server reboots automatically once the file copy is done.
  • The Server boots and invokes GUI and proceeds with the installation.
  • The Server reboots automatically once the GUI copy completes.

Now the eDirectory upgrade to 8.7.3 is completed.

7. To verify this, type VERSION on server console. Novell eDirectory version 8.7.3.SMP will be displayed.

II. Upgrade eDirectory from 8.7.3 to 8.7.3.7

Follow these steps to upgrade eDirectory to 8.7.3.7:

1. Download eDirectory 8737 from http://osg-dt-1/Builds/eDirectory/873SP7/ to the NetWare server. For example, download to SYS:\. The file is edir8737_final_20050902_16320.zip.

2. Expand the file. Using the Windows client, map the SYS volume and extract the zip file. This creates a directory and places subdirectories and files there.

3. At the server console, start NWCONFIG.NLM (type NWCONFIG).

4. Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed.

5. Press F3 and specify the path to the expanded Support Pack files, such as SYS:\EDIR8737\EDIRCORE\NETWARE\

6. Follow the online instructions to install. Proceed through the warning messages.

The Server reboots automatically once the file copy is done.

Now the eDirectory upgrade to 8.7.3.7 is completed.

7. To verify this, type VERSION on server console. Novell eDirectory version 8.7.3.7SMP will be displayed.

III. Upgrade NICI to 2.6.8

Follow these steps to upgrade the NICI to 2.6.8:

1. Download NICI 2.6.8 from http://osg-dt-1/Builds/eDirectory/873SP7/NICI_2.6.8/nw to the NetWare server. For example, download to SYS:\. The file is nici_u0.exe.

2. Expand the file. Using the Windows client, map the SYS volume and run the .exe file. This creates a directory and places subdirectories and files there.

3.At the server console, start NWCONFIG.NLM (type NWCONFIG).

4. Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed.

5. Press F3 and specify the path to the expanded Support Pack files, such as SYS:\NICI\.

6. Follow the online instructions to install. Proceed through the warning messages until the NICI upgrade completes.

IV. Do a Security Update

Once NICI gets installed, security updates need to be installed for eDirectory 8.7.3.7. When eDirectory 8.7.3.7 was extracted, it also created a folder named "security" and placed security-related files there.

Follow these steps for security updates:

1. At the server console, start NWCONFIG.NLM (type NWCONFIG).

2. Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed.

3. Press F3 and specify the path to the expanded Support Pack files, such as SYS:\EDIR873\SECURITY\SECUPD\NW.

4. Follow the online instructions to install.

First, this backs up the old security; then it updates the new one and finishes the installation.

V. Update the NDS Schema if needed

NWConfig lets you update schema under the Directory options. Also, under the Advanced Menu are Glocal Schema options. Once logged in, you can run the Post Netware schema upgrades and Optional schema upgrades that are valid.

The "worst-case scenario" for extending schema can be found here:

This completes the eDirectory upgrade to 8.7.3.7 on Netware 51 SP8 server.
