Current Version: ZENworks for Desktops 3.2

This package contains the source-code modifications to the Linux kernel currently shipping with ZENworks for Desktops v3.2 (kernel version 2.4.3) as well as the for the newer kernel version 2.4.11, which includes improved support for many devices, including pcmcia and USB devices.

These kernel modifications are needed by the ZENworks Imaging Engine to be able to correctly detect the internal geometry of older IDE hard drives. With these source-level patches, users can build customized kernels that will support ZENworks imaging.

These patches are intended solely for use with Linux kernel versions 2.4.3 and 2.4.11. A knowledgeable user may be able to modify them for use with other versions of the Linux kernel. This package contains instructions for applying the patch to the kernel source files, but not for building the new kernel. Kernel source files and instructions are available from www.kernel.org.

It is suggested that you also download the Linux Imaging Environment Build Script file and refer to the document describing how to modify your resource files and updating the Linux Kernel. For more info, see this article.

Files in this package

  1. Readme.txt (this file)
Note: Each of the following .tgz files contain a .config file and a .patch file. You should use the Linux tar utility to extract these files to the appropriate /usr/src/linux-2.4.vv (where 2.4.vv is the kernel version) directory. From that directory, you can use the .patch file to patch modules in the Linux Kernel (see instructions below) and the .config to make the Kernel.
  2. ZfDImgKrnlPatch-2.4.3.tgz - Linux kernel patch and configuration files. This file should be used if you want to configure and compile the Linux Kernel that shipped with ZenWorks for Desktops v3.2.

This file contains the following linux files:

    • .config - This file is used to configure the Linux Kernel and its modules for ZENworks Imaging.
    • zenpatch-2.4.3.patch - This file is used to patch the 2.4.3 kernel for the ZENworks imaging engine. These are required changes to allow the imaging engine to operate with Linux. If you do not have these changes, the imaging engine will not work properly.

To apply the patches, run the following command from the kernel source directory:
    patch -p0 < zenpatch-2.4.3.patch

  3. ZfDImgKrnlPatch-2.4.11.tgz - Linux kernel patch and configuration files. This file should be used if you want to configure and compile the kernel file that shipped with the patched resource files.

This file contains the following linux files:

  4. .config - This file is used to configure the Linux kernel and its modules for ZENworks Imaging.
  5. zenpatch-2.4.11.patch - This file is used to patch the 2.4.11 kernel for the ZENworks imaging engine. These are required changes to allow the imaging engine to operate with Linux. If you do not have these changes, the imaging engine will not work properly.
  6. To apply the patches, run the following command from the kernel source directory.
    patch -p0 < zenpatch-2.4.11.patch
