Version: ZENworks for Desktops 3.2

Novell recently announced support for Windows XP professional with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2; this document clarifies the exact support position as of 1 March 2002.

Not Supported

  • ZENworks Starter Pack, ZENworks for Desktops 2.0, ZENworks for Desktops 3.0
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Windows XP 64 bit versions

  • ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 with Windows XP professional running on 32 bit Intel hardware.

Windows XP professional machines must be running the Novell Client32 software version 4.82 or later to be managed by ZENworks for Desktops 3.2. This can be obtained from

There is also a ConsoleOne snapin update within the Client32 download that needs to be applied; this is to handle the launch and management of Windows XP professional Group Policys via the Group Policy Editor.

All Desktop Management features have been tested and supported with the two exceptions:

  • Workstation OS imaging
  • Windows Group Policy - Security policy

Imaging support

Full support for Desktop OS Imaging of Windows XP professional will be available in mid-2002 with the release of ZENworks for Desktops "Prometheus" - the next version of ZENworks for Desktops.

Until that time Novell have made available a pre-release version of ZENworks Imaging that is compatible with Windows XP professional on the ZENworks Cool Solutions Community. This is unsupported but has been used with great success by many customers.

Windows Group Policy - Security Policy

With the release of Windows XP professional Microsoft made some scalability and structure changes to the underlying Group Policy engine on the workstation; this has resulted in ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 being unable to apply the security Group Policy settings to the workstation. Novell is aware of the issues and is working with Microsoft to resolve them.
