With ZENworks for Servers 3 there is no way to assign an existing Distribution Object to a different Distributor. You must delete the distribution object and then re-create a new Distribution object associated with the new distributor. This defect is fixed with this patch.

The process of assigning a Distribution to a new Distributor requires four steps:

  1. Copy files that Distribution Object points to, to the file system on the new Distributor. (REQUIRED)
  2. Copy the working directory belonging to the Distribution from the old distributor to the new distributor (OPTIONAL) -- the working directory contains the previously created versions of the distribution. If you want the new distributor to build a new version of the distribution and send it to all Subscribers then copying the working directory is not necessary.
  3. Run the utility that allows you to reassign a Distribution to a new distributor.
  4. Resolve Certificates if necessary -- if the new distributor has never sent distributions to Subscribers that will be getting the distribution that has been reassigned, it will be necessary to ?Resolve Certificates? to the Subscribers that will be receiving the distribution.

Installation Instructions:

Copy the TEDAssignDistSnapin.jar to the snapins\ted directory under the ConsoleOne directory structure.

Before Reassigning Distribution

Before reassigning a Distribution to a new Distributor you must:

  • REQUIRED - Copy the files that the Distribution Object points to (i.e. files that make up the distribution) to the same location in the new Distributor's file system.
  • OPTIONAL - Copy the working directory associated with the Distribution (this directory will have the same name as the DN of the Distribution object) to the working directory of the new Distributor. (The working directory contains the previously created versions of the distribution. If you want the new distributor to build a new version of the distribution and send it to all Subscribers then copying the working directory is not necessary.)

Running the Reassign Distributions Utility

To run the ?Reassign Distributions? utility proceed as follows:

  1. Select one or more Distributions and the ?Assign New Distributor? option shows up on both the popup context menu and the File menu.
  2. Choose the ?Assign New Distributor? option.
  3. Select the new Distributor.
  4. Select ?Refresh? -- this will force Distributors (old and new) to re-read eDirectory so they ?know' about the Distributions that have been reassigned.
NOTE: If you do not select ?Refresh? it is IMPORTANT that you refresh both the old and new Distributors ASAP. Click OK with Refresh selected.
  5. Dialog should show that all Distributors affected (old and new) were refreshed. (If refresh was not selected, you will be advised that you need to manually refresh both Distributors (old and new).)
  6. Resolve Certificates if necessary -- if the new distributor has never sent distributions to Subscribers that will be getting the distribution that has been reassigned, it will be necessary to ?Resolve Certificates? to the Subscribers that will be receiving the distribution.

NOTE: do not change the name of the Distribution Object or the location in eDirectory as the DN is used when creating the working files associated with the Distribution.

NOTE the following:

  • Menus should be disabled if the selection range includes any other objects besides Distribution.
  • Selected Distributions should show up in the list on the dialog.
  • Ok button not enabled until new Distributor selected. (Press cancel on OES)
  • Click OK with refresh selected, should prompt that successful and that all Distributors effected were refreshed.
  • Click OK with refresh NOT selected, should prompt that successful but advise that need to manually refresh Distributors.
  • Make sure that all Distributions are gone from old Distributor's List.
  • Make sure all Distributions show up in new Distributor's list.
  • Make sure new Distributor shows up as the Distributor for each Distribution.
  • Make sure all Distributors have change when going into Remote Web Console view in iManager. (Verify that actually was refreshed.)
  • Have Refresh selected when one or more Distributors are down (not running ZfS), must handle gracefully.
  • It is important to remember that in the list of selected Distributions, they won't always each have the same Distributor.
