Editor's Note: Here's a chance to jump start your knowledge about NDS eDirectory and NDS Corporate Edition. The following is an excerpt from the soon-to-be-released book, Administering NDS Corporate Edition. This book was written by some of Novell's finest techies, and it covers the ins and outs of administering eDirectory or NDS Corporate Edition on a daily basis. But best of all, you'll find tips and tricks for administering NDS on all three platforms NetWare, NT, and Solaris.
If you like what you see in this chapter, we can guarantee you'll find the other chapters just as useful. You can reserve a copy for your private library on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com. Just one quick ordering tip: make sure you search for "Administering NDS 8". It's a little naming hiccup we encountered, and the online bookstores haven't made the name change yet.
NDS is a complex environment and in order to properly administer and troubleshoot an NDS environment, it is important to have an understanding of what is happening "under the hood". What types of operations does NDS take care of automatically? How can those automated operations be monitored and repaired, if necessary?
This chapter looks at the various integrity features offered by NDS for protecting directory data and structure. It also examines tools offered by Novell and third-parties for more advanced types of directory monitoring and repair. By the end of this chapter, you should have an understanding of the following tools and concepts:
- Database integrity
- Referential integrity
- NDS Background processes
- Advanced DSRepair Switches
- DS Trace
