Novell eDirectory 8.7 includes the following new features:

  • Transport Layer Security (TLS)
Provides support for TLS/SSL services based on the OpenSSL source code.
For more information, see Authentication and Security.

  • iMonitor 2.0
Provides SSL support on all platforms, object statistics reports, enhanced obituary processing reports, server advertising reports, enhanced tracing functions, and event monitoring and statistics.
For more information, see Using Novell iMonitor 2.0.

  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Provides monitoring of eDirectory events and statistics through SNMP.
For more information, see SNMP Support for Novell eDirectory.

  • Extensible Match
Provides partial support for extensible match (defined in LDAP v3 RFC 2251) for matching on DN attributes. This allows inclusion of DN elements in the search criteria. The inclusion of DN attributes in the search via the extensible match filter allows matching to be done on specific values in the DN of an object.
eDirectory 8.7 currently supports only an exact value match. It does not yet support matching rules in the extensible match filter, and it ignores matching rules specified in the extensible match filter.
For more information, see Extensible Match Search Filter.

  • Backup and Restore
eDirectory 8.7 introduces a new focus for backup and restore, called "hot continuous backup." With the new Backup eMTool, you back up the eDirectory database for each server individually, and you can do it while eDirectory is running. The Backup eMTool is great for restoring an individual server after a hard drive failure or for moving a server to a new machine, and it's much faster than using TSA for NDS to back up the tree.
For more information, see Backing Up and Restoring Novell eDirectory.

NOTE:  (The legacy TSA for NDS backup still works as documented in eDirectory 8.6; both TSA for NDS and the new backup can be used if necessary.)

  • Novell iManager
Provides a Web-based management tool that uses Roles to delegate eDirectory administration, management, and services tasks. Novell iManager consists of two pieces, eDirectory Management Framework (eMFrame) and eDirectory Management Toolbox (eMBox). Novell eMFrame plug-ins communicate over standard directory access protocols to perform routine management tasks and also communicate with eMBox.

    • eMBox is the server-side piece that works with iManager to provide Web-based iManager access to functionality in DSRepair, DSMerge, and the Novell Import Convert Export utility. It also includes Web-based access to the new Backup and Restore functionality. All functions are also accessible, either on the local server or remotely, via a command line client.
For more information, see The eDirectory Management Toolbox.

    • eDirectory utilities available in Novell iManager include DSRepair, DSMerge, Backup and Restore, LDAP, WanMan, and the Novell Import Convert Export utility. These are the same utilities that shipped in eDirectory 8.6.2 with fixes in DSRepair to accommodate Extensible Match. A new SNMP management utility is also included.
For more information, see the Novell iManager Administration Guide.

  • Novell eGuide 2.1
Provides a Web-based corporate address book and self-administration tool. eGuide allows users to get information about other users in the directory and modify their own information. It contains all the people, places, and things you need to know in a single location.
For more information, see the Novell eGuide 2.1 Administration Guide.
