Novell reports surprising early results from a new type of promotion it is currently running, and while it's not certain if the results will be immediately good for the bottom line, the customer response is certainly pleasing to the company.
The promotion, which was introduced to coincide with the recent release of Novell eDirectory 8.7, saw the company target customers of Sun ONE and iPlanet Directory Server, offering them free eDirectory licenses. Under the deal, each customer would receive 250,000 free lifetime user licenses for Novell eDirectory, and 25,000 licenses for DirXML, a tool which both migrates and synchronizes the data to let the systems run parallel during the migration period. It's a package with a potential value of $650,000 (US), $2 for each of the 250,000 eDirectory seats and $6 a seat for the DirXML.
The promotion was launched November 5 and is scheduled to run through the end of April. Novell initially estimated that they would attract 40 to 50 customers over the entire life of the promotion. They guessed wrong. In the first month, they had 1,700 customers sign up. Over 5 per cent of them are Canadian, almost 100 customers in total. They had previously had 734 million user licenses worldwide, and added, potentially, another 425 million.
