Migrating from Novell Small Business Suite 4x/5x to Novell Small Business Suite 6
System Requirements
Migrating from NetWare 4x/5x to Novell Small Business Suite 6 requires the following:
Server Requirements
- Existing NetWare Server with NetWare 4.x or NetWare 5.x
- New Novell Small Business Suite Server with
the following:
- 256MB of RAM
- A DOS partition with at least 200 MB available space (1 GB recommended)
- Enough disk space to accommodate all transferred user and application directories from the 4x/5x system (2 GB minimum)
Client Requirements
- Windows 98, ME, XP, NT and 2000
- Novell Client installed
Estimated Setup Time
The time required to migrate from NetWare 4x/5x to Novell Small Business Suite 6 depends on several variables. With both servers and the client workstation pre-configured, the actual migration process can be accomplished in about one hour. If the new server and workstation are to be configured and the user information and application data is extensive, this process can take up to several hours.
Preparation
There are several possible methods for migrating to a new version of NetWare. Possibilities include: 1) migrating in place?i.e. using the same server with users and data in place while updating the network operating system; 2) migrating an old server's contents to an existing server with users and data already installed or ?merging? servers; and 3) migrating from an older server with users and data to a new server. While all three methods are described in Novell documentation on NetWare and the Migration Wizard, this guide will only outline the last option?migrating from an old server to a new one. As a practical recommendation, migrating to a new server will not only eliminate the potential pitfalls of merging two systems with many variables that may need to be manually configured but will also provide a hardware platform where new and future technologies can be added without restriction.
Novell has provided a Migration Wizard that assists in the upgrade process. The Migration Wizard is a Windows-based client application that must be run on a Windows 98 or newer Windows platform with the Novell Client installed and be attached to the old and new server using the same protocol (TCP/IP or IPX). Since many older servers are already running IPX and implementing TCP/IP requires installing and configuring Novell's NWIP, it is recommended that IPX be used as the connection protocol.
Migration Steps
| Installation Step | Description |
| Install Novell Small Business Suite 6 on the new (destination) server | Install Novell Small Business Suite 6 on a new server. Follow the instructions on the quickstart guide or documentation included with Novell Small Business Suite 6. The install process for Novell Small Business Suite 6 has been simplified with a graphical interface and easily allows administrators to set up Internet connectivity. |
| Configure IPX on the Novell Small Business Suite 6 server | The default protocol for Novell Small Business Suite 6 is TCP/IP. To enable IPX, go to the system console and enter LOAD INETCFG. Select the ?Protocol? option and use TAB to enable IPX. Note: For NetWare 5, if TCP/IP is enabled this step is not necessary. The Migration Wizard requires the both the old and new system be running the SAME protocol: IPX or TCP/IP. |
| Enable IPX |
| Bind IPX to the existing network board |
| Set ServerID | If IPX does not load, it may be due to the lack of a ServerID. To set the ServerID, go to the system console and enter: SERVERID [serverid] where serverid can be any desired string of text. Then restart the system using the INETCFG main menu dialog option. |
| Install the Novell Client | Install the Novell Client on a client workstation that is connected to the new and old servers. Both servers should be running on the same network (same network ID) and must both be running the same protocol (IPX). |
| Download the Migration Wizard | The NetWare Migration Wizard 6 can be downloaded from the Novell Support Web site at: http://download.novell.com/ |
| Install the Migration Wizard |
| Specify the file location for the Migration Wizard files on the client workstation |
| Start the Migration Wizard and select ?Create a new project? |
| Specify the type of source server as ?NetWare 4,5 or 6? |
| The ?View Setup Tasks? option provides a checklist of requirements that must be completed before migration will be successful. View these if necessary. Make sure that the source servers are current with the required support packs or patches. NetWare 4.11 and 4.2 must have NetWare 4.11/4/2 Support Pack 9. |
| Specify a project name of your choosing |
| Select the NetWare source server. This can be either a NetWare 4x or NetWare 5x server. |
| Select the NDS? tree that the destination server is in. |
| Select the destination server |
| The migration process consists of several steps including copying volumes, editing configuration files, and beginning migration. All operations are ?staged? and ?verified? for errors before migration actually proceeds. After migration is complete, the destination server will be named the same as the source server. Select the ?Copy Volumes? option. |
| Select the volumes that you wish to migrate |
| Manually select any SYS directories that you wish to migrate. |
| The migration process can overwrite duplicate files if desired. Select the source file action; the default is to copy source files only if the source file is newer. |
| If users are logged on and files are open, these files will not be copied. You can proceed and then recopy any files that have been changed if desired. It is recommended that all users log out and login be disabled. To broadcast a message and disable login, select this option. |
| Supervisor/Administrator passwords are required for both servers. Enter those here. |
| If no errors are encountered, migration will be initiated and files migrated. If compression has been enabled on the source server, make sure that the space available on the destination volume is larger than the space used on the source volume. |
| Configuration files can be manually edited if desired. Select the file to be modified. |
| Source and destination configuration files are compared and manual edits made to destination files if desired. |
| A license is required for the destination server. Enter the license diskette for the new server or locate the license through the browse function. |
| To this point, the migration has merely been staged and verified. To initiate actual migration of files, click on ?Migrate.? |
| At the completion of the migration, the source server will be shut down and the new server (destination) has been restarted with the old server (source) name. |
| To complete the migration process, verify that NDS is synchronized (if the new server is part of another tree) and reboot the client. |
| The migration has been successful. |
