Novell announced the new Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack program on April 10 - just three days before BrainShare 2003, where Novell made 300 Starter Pack kits available to qualified resellers.

We recently caught up with Robert Strasser, a partner with Clearview Consulting, who after hearing about the Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack program, worked quickly to become qualified and then picked up his copy of the software kit at BrainShare.

"We're going to be doing a big advertising push for local small businesses. Our goal is to deploy more Starter Packs than any other reseller in the greater Seattle area. We're going to take advantage of this program as much as we can."

Strasser's first deployment was at Clearview Consulting, where he and his two associates have been using the suite as not only the company's new network infrastructure, but as a working example for the company's customers and prospects to come in and see the kind of expansive network services Clearview Consulting can now offer for simply the cost of some server hardware and a few hours of installation and training.

Clearview Consulting's customers and prospects have liked what they've seen so far. Strasser mentioned one customer in particular, a law practice in the Seattle area, who after seeing Clearview Consulting's internal deployment of the Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack, is getting ready to have the company replace its Windows 2000 network with a single server Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack similar to the one in Clearview Consulting's office.

"Primarily, [the law firm] is tired of viruses and the issues of continually having to worry about security. They want to get a web site up, but they don't want to use [Microsoft] IIS. So we've assured them that Apache is much more secure and more widely used on the Internet as an enterprise web solution," explained Strasser.

Strasser adds that for this particular customer, the Starter Pack program was introduced at the right time. "Costs were always holding [the law firm] back before. To put in a firewall, and even a separate web box, which they were thinking of doing, including even running Apache on Linux, was too expensive for them."

"Strasser continues "Now with the Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack, the law firm has a lot more options including running MySQL as a database backend, better and more secure printing for their clients through iPrint, and VPN, just to name a few."

Along with law firms, Clearview Consulting does a sizeable amount of business with travel agencies. Strasser mentioned the Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack's VPN capabilities and remote administration is ideal for some of the company's existing customers in that industry.

Another benefit of the Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack is it has given Clearview Consulting the impetus to upgrade some of its customers running very old versions of networking software. Strasser mentioned one customer he plans on moving from PopMail to GroupWise 6, which is included in the Starter Pack.

While the Novell Small Business Suite 6 Starter Pack program has been around less than a month, the opportunities it can provide has caused Strasser and his associates to rethink its business focus to fully take advantage of the program.

Strasser concludes, "We're going to be doing a big advertising push for local small businesses. Our goal is to deploy more Starter Packs than any other reseller in the greater Seattle area. We're going to take advantage of this program as much as we can."
