The dependable NetWare 4.11 server that the firm had been using since 1998 was overdue for an upgrade. The server was out of disk space, and the warranty on the hardware had long expired.
In addition, the firm had decided that it wanted to have its own in-house e-mail system, rather than continue to rely on an ISP hosting its e-mail services for them.

Legal Technology Partners (LTP) has been servicing the law firm's network for many years. It has come to rely on Bill Kittilson, LTP's Senior Network Engineer, for periodic support, troubleshooting, and advice. Bill works with the firm's Network Administrator, Tracy Venus. When the firm decided an upgrade was in order, they called in LTP to analyze the current configuration and recommend a solution. LTP compared the Novell Small Business Suite 6 to Microsoft's Small Business Server, and summarized to the firm, the individual products included in each suite.
The firm selected the Novell Small Business Suite 6 based on price, the inclusion of ZENworks for Desktops, and the favorable reputation that Novell had gained with the firm after more than 10 years of reliable service.
The engineering work was completed by Bill Kittilson. Karen Allen, LTP's Senior Application Specialist, provided end user training and macro conversion work. Frank Hefner, LTP's Senior Consultant, provided the configuration specifications and project management. The solution rollout was completed in approximately 6 weeks with no disruption to user operations.

The firm's new system has eliminated the hardware related-stability problems and lack of disk space they had with the older technology. All the firm's users are now running the latest version of WordPerfect, so all documents are produced in standard format. This firm now operates its own internal e-mail system based on GroupWise and the operation is much more robust and feature-rich than the previous ISP based POP3 e-mail service.
The firm plans to make good use of ZENworks for Desktops to roll out future software upgrades as needed.
LTP helped the firm select a new ISP. The new ISP provides web hosting and domain hosting over a DSL link, and replaces the firm's previous use of two separate providers for web hosting and domain hosting. This new arrangement has saved the firm on its monthly costs.
Novell Small Business Suite 6 provided a cost-effective and easy-to-deploy solution with all the features the firm needed to operate its network today, and for years to come.
