Novell Technical Support: TID10095881: Can't find Notify program for GroupWise on Linux

problem:

There is not a GroupWise specific Notify program for Linux as exists for the GroupWise Windows client.

fix:

If the GroupWise system allows for IMAP4 or POP3 access to the post office, various "monitoring" programs can be used. This TID will outline the steps for using Inbox Monitor under GNOME and KBiff under KDE.

Ask the GroupWise administrator for IP address for the POP3/IMAP4 server (this can be the GWIA for both, or possibly the POA for IMAP4). If the GroupWise system does not allow for either IMAP4 or POP3 access, it will not be possible to receive GroupWise notifications.

Choose whether you prefer POP3 or IMAP4 notification (if both are available). Typically, if IMAP4 is available, it is the preferred method of notification.

GNOME:

  1. Right-click in the system tray where you would like to have your notification visible (for example, upper right-hand corner next to the clock).

  2. Choose Add to Panel|Internet|Inbox Monitor

  3. Configure the Behavior Settings tab to set how often the monitor should poll your mailbox to check for new mail, how you would like the visual notification, and whether you would like sounds, etc.

  4. On the Inbox Settings tab, change the "mailbox resides on" setting to either Remote IMAP-server or Remote POP3-server. Enter the mail server IP address you received from your GroupWise Administrator, and enter your username and password.

KDE:

  1. Click the SuSE/Novell icon (typically the Icon to the bottom far left - a Green circle with the Chameleon for SuSE Pro or a Red Novell N for Novell Linux Desktop).

  2. Choose Run Command and type in kbiff (all lowercase).

  3. Make a new profile name if you wish. Set the Poll setting in seconds. Leave the mail client as "kmail -check". On the New Mail tab indicate how you would like to be notified.

  4. On the Mailbox tab, change the Protocol box to either imap4 or pop3. For imap4 change the "Mailbox" field in Inbox. Enter the mail server IP address you received from your GroupWise Administrator, and enter your username and password.
