Problem: NetMail integrates with three Anti-Virus engines. Symantec CarrierScan is one of these anti-virus products. Finding product information and licensing information for this product can be difficult because the name has changed, and the licensing model can be confusing.

Solution: Back in September I posed a question to the NIMSTalk list about licensing for Symantec's CarrierScan product. With the help of our Symantec Account Manager and her technical support person, I have finally figured out how to purchase and license this anti-virus product. I thought that there may be others wondering about this, so I will share what I know.

  1. Symantec CarrierScan 2.1 was updated and renamed to Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 3.0 earlier this year. On November 15th Symantec released Scan Engine 4.0. If you are looking at this product, make sure you are using the new name, Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 4.0.

  2. Licensing for Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine has been very, very confusing. In the past I have been told that you must purchase a license for each user, for each e-mail server, and even some more bizarre combinations. It turns out that the licensing model changed on November 15th when version 4.0 was released. There are now two ways to license Scan Engine, a per user license or a web server license. Per user would be based on the number of e-mail users using your mail servers. The web server license is per web server that is talking to the Scan Engine product. After discussing this with our Symantec account manager and technical support person, they determined that since NetMail includes a web server (ModWebd), we should license this using the web server license. Bottom Line: Our purchase cost is now around $2,800, instead of the $37,000 we were quoted just last month using the per user license for version 3.0!

  3. Part Numbers have changed since Scan Engine version 4.0 was released. The Academic part numbers are: Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 4.0 for Web Servers + 1YR Support 10041241 Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine Media 10037820

  4. Basic Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 4.0 Product Information (PDF file) is available at: http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/content/displaypdf.cfm?pdfid=333&EID=0

Hope this information is helpful to someone!
