The IT department at the Alberta provincial legislature is interested in using the document management features of GW and WebPublisher to publish Hansard (daily legislative proceedings that must be made available immediately in both print and document format). We have demonstrated all of the other features of GW and GW document management and have one last challenge to overcome in order for this to satisfy all of their needs. If we can solve this one last challenge, they might be able to use GW WebPublisher to replace their current NT solution. This would be a really nice win for GW and Novell. Now, what's the challenge, you may ask? In order for GW to be their solution they must be able to include the : (colon) as a searchable character. The reason for this is that the colon is used to signify that someone got up in the legislature and was speaking. Therefore to search for a document which contains Klein: December 1997 budget would mean that the person is looking to see what Premier Klein said in the legislature. This would give a different list than searching for a document which contains Klein December 1997 budget. I haven't been able to find reference to changing the search parameters for GW to make a colon a significant, searchable character. I sure hope that I'm simply missing a configuration option somewhere.

Sorry to say the answer to this is no, it is not possible to search for a colon with current versions of GroupWise (including 5.5). The capability to do this does exist in the next version of the underlying QuickFinder technology (the QuickFinder 2.0 SDK), but GroupWise has not switched over to this next version as yet, and that will not happen until the next major release of GroupWise.
Note: Using the 2.0 SDK, it is a simple matter of changing the characters in a map file, and then re-indexing everything from that point. However, this would then make it so that the 'klein:' would be a different word than 'klein,' so that if you search for klein, you will not find any of the klein: instances, unless you search for klein? or klein*.
