A:
This was answered by Dave Parkes in the Novell Support Forms:
Question: What are .GWI files and how are they opened?
Answer: They are links (shortcuts) to objects in the GW database, so if the original object is removed or becomes otherwise absent, the shortcut no longer works. Clicking on a .gwi should start Groupwise.

- The question is how do you open GWI files without Groupwise installed, which is not answered at all.
- Helpful and informative. Ignore those with such poor reading comprehension that they cannot see the answer right before their eyes.
- I have a .gwi file and no groupwise on my computer. I wanted to be able to open the file, and this answer gives NO solution to the problem. It actually answers some other question, and is not at all helpful.
- While it DOES actually answer the question, it is rather a hidden answer. The GWI file as stated is just a pointer to a record in the Groupwise database. Without having anything to read the database (the GW client!), the GWI file is totally meaningless and contains nothing of value.
- THANK YOU
- not useful at all. All I want to know is how to read a .gwi file
- why can't you just tell us in simple direct english how we can read a gwi without having GW installed? -5 if there was room for it.
- Had to do an incredible amount of searching to find the "Dave Parkes" .gwi reference which should have just ben included here like I am about to do: http://forums.novell.com/group/novell.support.groupwise.6x.web-access/readerNoFrame.tpt/@thread@4705@F@10@D-@+4705/@article@4706
- This article solved my question!
- the question was answered perfectly clearly. The other users obviously cannot understand that to open a SHORTCUT to something WITHIN groupwise, you neeed to HAVE groupwise. stop and think before flaming the person who is only trying to help you. remember, you came here looking for help. he didnt force it on you. show some respect
- I beg to differ with the previous comment. The question is clearly how to open a file WITHOUT having Groupwise. The answer REQUIRES Groupwise. If you read between the lines, the answer is that the GWI file is worthless UNLESS you have Groupwise, as there is nothing in the file itself - it is simply a pointer to the database.
