Q:
I often read / hear the word "kicker" in the Linux and KDE forums. What exactly does that mean?
A:
The "Kicker" Panel is the KDE equivalent of the windows "System Tray". It's a place where applications can be running in the background, but still provide easy access to start / stop / modify.
In Gnome, the same thing is called the "Notification Area" and can be added to the panel via right-clicking on the panel -> Add To Panel -> Utility -> Notification Area
