What alternatives to Microsoft Office exist?

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Posted: 20 Jan 2005

Q:
I don't want to use MS Office anymore. Is that possible? Are there open-source (or closed source, for that matter) alternatives to Microsft Office?

A:
Yes. Glad you asked.

There are a few, actually.

  1. The best and most well-known is OpenOffice. It provides the whole office suite.
  2. Another good one is KOffice. It's KDE's answer to MS Office.
  3. Abiword is a good word processor
  4. Gnumeric is a fantastic spreadsheet program.
And there ya have it. There are probably more out there, but these are the more popular ones.

OpenOffice usually is pre-installed on SUSE and Novell Linux Desktop by default.
