VPN login from different sites

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Posted: 26 Jan 2005

Q:
We have two offices, in cities a few hundred miles apart. Site A has a Novell 5.1 server at their location, and they connect to our BM3.8 server in Site B. Since BM 3.8 uses the Novell client to log in to the server in Site B from Site A, will the users at Site A be able to connect to their local server at the same time? If so how is this accomplished?

A:
Only if you specify the login. It's optional, and while the VPN client integrates with the Novell client when it's installed, the two are still separate. Also, the VPN client also works completely without any Novell client installed. Of course, you can't log in to Netware then at all, without the client.

Logging in to both sites is not a problem, when:

1. The two offices use different IP networks internally.
2. The VPN is configured to only encrypt the private network(s) behind it (not *all* networks) and is configured to still allow the connected client to access all other networks unecrypted (traffic rules).
3. The VPN client isn't set to log out of the existing server connection when it logs into the new one.

Have you ever considered a S2S VPN for that? It's so much easier.
