Problems using Veritas Backup Exec

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
We're running NetWare 6.5 SP1 with Veritas Backup Exec 9.x. When we load the BackupExec startup batch, it hangs when checking the system environment, and we end up having to restart the server. During our tests we found that it only happens if DOS has been disabled and the NetWare bootloader is used, if that makes any difference.

A:
This is a problem with the Backup Exec Disaster Recovery portion of the Veritas product. They make DOS API calls to get all of the DOS partition information in order to restore using Disaster Recovery. Because there is no DOS partition when using the new Bootloader feature, their Disaster Recovery fails when trying to make these calls. Veritas will be releasing a maintenance pack on their web site in the near future to take care of this. In the mean time, the workaround is to add the switch -BC:\NWSERVER to the BKUPEXEC.NLM load line in the SYS:\BESTART.NCF file.

Aother possible workaround would be to disable the NetWare bootloader and boot from DOS. To disable the NetWare bootloader type NWBOOT -undo at the NetWare console, then reset the server.
