Q:
Our school has a server with two disk drives. We installed NW 6.5 on the server. Through remote manager you can see both drives. I want to mirror the disks. How would I do this? If I click on the hyperlink for the second disk (the one with nothing on it), it gives me a message about setting up the partition table. Do I have to do this before I can mirror it?

A:
Yes, you do. One simple way to do it is by launching the Novell Storage Services Management Utility (NSSMU) at the console. NSSMU loads as an NLM -- you can do it at the server console, or you can do it via Rconsole or Adrem (you can use Adrem Free Console for this action).

Since it has a character based interface, it is pretty straightforward to use.

Another option is the NetWare Remote Manager (NRM). NRM should have a "mirror drive" link next to the drive with the existing partition. Selecting that will show free space that can be used. If the drive you want to mirror to isn't in that list, then creating a partition of the same size on the second drive is the next step.

NRM is a pretty easy way to do mirroring for most situations, but it doesn't have the flexibility of NSSMU. If you have to do 3-way, for instance, or eliminate a partition from a mirror set, then NSSMU is the best way to go. NSSMU may take care of your partition initialization automatically, also.

But NRM is definitely an easy way to mirror.
