New SNMP Gateway

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Posted: 9 Nov 2004

Q:
With the new SNMP Gateway, is it possible to manage the specific printer settings (like the default paper tray for exemple) like it is possible with the third-party gateways? Also, what's the general feedback of the customers who have switched to the new SNMP Gateway? Have they seen a significant improvement in the overall stability of the printing infrastructure compared to before when they were using the third-party gateways?

A:
Printer and job settings are managed through the driver, not through the gateway. The Novell gateway uses LPR. LPR is a simple dump protocol that is just used to transfer data.

We have not found a customer that hasn't liked the new SNMP Gateway. It is very fast and most importantly it is very reliable. HP has made a public announcement encouraging their customers to move to the Novell gateway. Support will tell every customer to move to this gateway as soon as a customer reports a problem with a third party gateway.
