Q:
I would like to synchronize username and passwords between eDirectory and
UNIX, so users are directly taken to the database-program on UNIX (where they also have to authenticate). Is eDirectory for UNIX a possibility, or do I have to look elsewhere?

eDir for *nix will not do what you're looking for. Look into Identity Manager
(IDM2) for user provisioning and password synchronization. Also check out http://www.padl.com/
