Searching on substrings

Q:
In a directory that I have recently taken over, an attribute is declared
as type "Distingushed Name".
When I attempt to search for "classEnrollment=acadclass=2005SUM*" I get
"inappropriate matching".
Does eDir not search these as strings?

DN searches support exact matches only - it will not match on a substring. See: http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10092520.htm
As far as I know, it's just a limitation for DN. It's a part of the
extensible match functionality, but with DN there's a lookup that has to
take place. So, substring search was probably excluded largely for performance reasons.
