A:
This symptom could be caused by various sources, but the most probable one is the use of libmad as your mp3 plugin for XMMS. You've got to get rid of the mad plugin and install the mpg123 plugin instead.

- I know my way around Linux, but this answer helped me get nowhere... how does a normal user "get rid of the mad plugin and install mpg123"?
