Problem is after doing this I can't get any programs to work - I can get "log out" to work after pressing it half a dozen or so times. I would appreciate any help you can give me on this problem.

If you are using a USB ADSL Modem and it has an Ethernet interface, then I recommend using the Ethernet rather than USB, as the USB interface can slow your computer down, whereas the Ethernet does not. This strategy also gives you the benefit of a much easier setup, where the Ethernet port on your computer to the ADSL can be set either to DHCP from the ADSL software or as a static address. If you have an local Ethernet network, this can be on another card, with a different network, so that you can get some good firewalling between the internet and your local network.
For example, your ADSL Ethernet port may be at 10.0.0.138 and your card at 10.0.0.1. Your other local network card could be at 10.0.1.1 and you can route this network through the 10.0.0.1 card to the internet. It also means when you boot up, all the computer has to do is set up the two Ethernet cards. The rest is up to the ADSL modem software, which you can usually access by putting its address in your browser.
In my example that would be http://10.0.0.138
Have a look at your modem documentation for the correct address. Other than that you can try SUSE technical support, giving them copies of your /var/log/messages and the output from dmesg. Stomfi
