Public IP numbers for NICs

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Posted: 1 Dec 2005

Q:
I'm running two servers, one SBS 6.5, eventually with GroupWise as well, the second a SBS 6.5 BorderManager server running no other apps. I have assigned 192.168.1.1 to the Private NIC on the BM server. Should the Public NIC be assigned something like 192.168.2.1, or should I use a public address received from my Internet provider?

Also, should the internal interface on the router be assigned something like 192.168.2.2, or should I again use a public address received from my ISP?

A:
You should use a public IP number (or numbers) as assigned to you by your ISP. Typically you would ask for a /29 or /28. However, you could use the Router to do PAT and therefore work with just one assigned IP number. I'd prefer not to go this route, but it is plausible.
