Q:
I have a user who I am trying to assign rights to for a directory on a server. I browse to the directory folder, select Add Trustee, then select the proper object and click OK. I get no errors or warnings, yet when I go back to view the trustees, a totally different user has been assigned rights! The problem does NOT happen on TFS volumes but happens on NSS volumes.

If it's NSS, it sounds like you have two objects with the same GUID. NSS uses the GUID, not the object id, to store in the file system for trustee rights. Do a Knowledgebase search for "duplicate guid" - one result is:
TID 10064771.
