Connecting Linux to the Internet via a USB Modem
Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer
Q:
I'm having some trouble trying to setup a connection to the internet using SUSE Linux 8.0 Personal and a USB modem. I phoned my ISP to ask for help and they replied "You cannot connect a Linux PC to the internet via a USB modem" Dumb Question: How to connect a Linux PC to the internet via a USB modem (Netcomm NB1200)?
A:
According to the www.linux-usb.org guide, USB modems are only supported under Linux if they comply to the Communication Device Class (CDC) specification.
I can't find anything to suggest your modem complies with this, so the only way is to get a modem that you can connect via an Ethernet port, which you configure for DHCP.
Chipset manufacturers are to blame and we can only lobby them for Linux support to help change things for the better.
