I am looking for a way to tell what version of eDirectory I am running on my Linux box (Suse9).

Try ndsstat on your console. It should be give feedback like this:
Treename: TREENAME
Server Name: Servercontext
Binary Version: 10552.79 #(depending of Version installed)
Root Most Entry Depth: 0
Product Version: eDirectory for Linux v8.7.3.7 [DS] #
