Missing some modules on IBM iSeries, with SLES8

Q:
I seem to be missing some modules on my IBM iSeries, using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8. I performed an update, but afterwards the system starts but major services cannot start. I installed a new kernel, uninstalling the old modules, but I am still booting with the old kernel. This is very frustrating. Any advice?

A:

  1. Log in to strsst and check to see which slot on the OS400 side you are booting. Probably it is C.
  2. Now log in to the Linux LPAR with
    telnet iSeries_IP 2301
  3. Log in as root. Check the file /etc/lilo.conf. Kernel slot B is probably set here. Change this to the setting determined from the OS400 side. Then run the command lilo.
This takes a while. The kernel will now be written in the proper slot. After this, reIPL the Linux LPAR and everything should work properly.
