Q:
I'm having difficulty formatting a partition with XFS during the installation of SUSE Linux 9.1. What's up with that?
A:
A bugfix for a memory leak in XFS is responsible for this bug. The kernel crashes when you try to mount a partition formatted with XFS. Unfortunately, this bug was detected too late and we could not fix it in time for the final version of SUSE Linux 9.1.
The following driver update must be installed in order to use SUSE Linux 9.1 with XFS.
Warning: This Driver Update works not for Systems that have XFS on the Root-Device (/). For XFS on root the whole kernel must be replaced. We are working on a solution for that.
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/hvogel/xfs_hotfix/
If your computer is equipped with a floppy drive, download the floppy image xfs_hotfix.img and copy it to a floppy disk with the command dd.
Insert the floppy in your floppy drive immediately after booting from the first CD or DVD. The floppy disk installs a kernel hotfix that enables you to use XFS partitions with SUSE Linux 9.1. Once the installation is completed, it is strongly recommended to install the latest update kernel by means of our on-line update tool YOU.
If your computer is not equipped with a floppy drive or you deploy the AMD64 version of SUSE Linux 9.1, download a .zip file located in the same directory on the ftp server and unpack it on a medium readable during the installation such as a USB floppy, USB stick, hard disk, CD/DVDROM, etc. Then boot your system in the manual installation. Choose the item Add Driver Update from the menu Kernel Module and select the device where the zip file has been unpacked.
