Getting YaST Online Update to recognize you at login

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
I'm having trouble using the SUSE YaST Online Update. I type in my registration code absolutely correctly under "Code" but it doesn't accept it. Any advice would be appreciated.

A:
Yes, that's perplexing isn't it? Turns out it really wants your User name there, not your registration code. (Go figure.) Here's the scoop.

When you start up YaST >> Online Update on a SLES8 machine, the first screen displays the System Information and the URL of the Online Update server, then a box appears asking for your credentials. The two fields in that box are "Code" and "Password". This is misleading because it requires your SUSE Portal User name instead of the Registration Code.

There is a 14-digit Reg. Code that is delivered with the product or with a Service Agreement, however this is not what the YOU server needs for the login.

Enter your SUSE Portal Username and Password in the two fields in the Authenticaton dialog, and then click "Login" to proceed. The next screen should show the available updates for your server.
