In SUSE Linux, why does the hard disk, sometimes quite spontaneously, begin to work?
A:
A cron-daemon is running in the background. This is a program which launches given commands at a given time (or in defined intervals). By default Cron is so configured that it erases old files in the /tmp directory and updates the database for "locate".
If you do not want this behaviour, you can switch it off in YaST under System administration -> change configuration file. You can change the variables CRON and RUN_UPDATEDB to fit your needs. If you turn CRON off completely be sure to regularly clean out the logfiles under /var/log. See the SUSE handbook under "logfiles" for more information on this subject.
