Q:
I'ms using SUSE Linux 9.1 and am getting a strange error message when using LILO boot loader. After an online update I get:
Waiting for device /dev/812 to appear

I can only get the boot process to continue by pressing a key. What's the story?

A:
This is due to an error in the mkinitrd package. Here's the fix:

  1. First, continue the boot process by pressing any key.
  2. Download the latest mkinitrd package from our FTP server (or from a local mirror):
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.1/rpm/i586/mkinitrd.rpm
  3. Or, if you are using the AMD64 version of the distribution:
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86_64/update/9.1/rpm/x86_64/mkinitrd.rpm
  4. Use the following command to install this package as the user root:
    rpm -Uhv mkinitrd.rpm
  5. Then run the following commands as root:
    mkinitrd
    lilo
Subsequently, the system should boot without any problems.
