NNLS + SLES9: ndsconfig says LDAP 389 is in use

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
I tried to install NNLS on a brand-new SLE9 box (first express, than after grubbing everything, using custom) Everything works ok up to where ndsconfig starts: it complains that LDAP port 389 is in use. I give 390 and it is accepted. The rest runs smoothly, BUT...Apache does not start: "unable to bind to address 631". What happens here?

A:
Here are some thoughts:

  • SLES9 installs OpenLDAP which uses ports 389 and 636.
It also probably installs CUPS, which uses port 631 (which iPrint uses).
Before installing NNLS 1.0 on this system, you need to uninstall these two components or choose different ports for LDAP (CUPS would still probably best be uninstalled for iPrint to work).

  • You need to make sure the OpenLDAP server is not running during the NNLS install, then there shouldn't be a conflict with the port.

  • You have two options with SLES9.
First, you can disable LDAP when you install (right after you configure the NICS). Or, you can disable LDAP with YaST.
