Remote control across a VPN

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Posted: 3 Jun 2004

Q:
I'm getting ready to upgrade, and have one question. Can you remote control a workstation across a VPN with ZENworks for Desktops 4.0? Crossing my fingers...

A:
Yes, as long as you are able to establish TCP session across agent and console, it works.

In ZfD3.x you were required to import all workstations that you wanted to be manageable. In ZfD4.x another authentication scheme exists which can be used outside the firewall, or without importing the workstation.

Here's how the Password Based Authentication works:

  • End User establishes password
  • RMA encrypts password in registry
  • Console reads Network Address from User object
  • Console connects to RMA over port 1761
  • Administrator enters password for authentication
  • RMA authenticates against password in registry
