Is there a reg setting I can use to prevent some systems from using thevolatile users policy? Or perhaps some other way? We want to have all ofour laptops immune to this in just in case we decide to turn it back on inthe future. We might still want to use it on our desktops though.

Take a look at this TID: you may just need to completely disable DLU on workstations.
or
You could create another container to import laptops into and then just do not associate the DLU policy with that container.
