Trust Relationships
Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Evert H. wrote: Hello, I'm testing NDS for NT, and we plan to implement it soon in our network on our NT domain (a PDC and one BDC) here in Amersfoort. We have a NetWare site, but because we are part of a larger company, we use Exchange for e-mail, and thus we use Windows NT. Other parts of the company use only Windows NT. We have trust relationships between our NT domain and the other NT domains (in Utrecht and Rotterdam). This runs over WAN links. At the moment, there are no plans to implement NDS for NT in those domains. (Personally, I think this would be a tremendous idea). My questions are: Will the trust relationships still work properly? There are a few users working in Utrecht who don't have a Novell Client on their PC, and they log on to our domain here in Amersfoort. Will this still work with NDS for NT implemented? And, will there be any impact, as a result of installing NDS for NT, on the network traffic over these trusts?

Evert, we just can't resist answering a well-organized question like yours, even if it really is three questions stuffed into one. To keep things simple, we'll answer these one at a time in the order you asked. How's that for service?
- Will the trust relationships still work properly?Yes. You can establish Trust relationships between domains running NDS for NT and domains that are not running NDS for NT. What's working for you now will continue to chug along and work for you in the future.
- There are a few users working in Utrecht who don't have a Novell Client on their PC, and they log on to our domain here in Amersfoort. Will this still work with NDS for NT implemented?NDS for NT does not require anything to be installed on workstations, so you won't have any problems with your users in Utrecht who log in to the domain in Amersfoort. With NDS for NT, you only have to have the software on the PDC and all the BDCs in the domain. So, workstations that only have the Microsoft Client installed will continue to communicate with the domain in the same way they always have.
- Will there be any impact as a result of installing NDS for NT on the network traffic over these Trusts?Installing NDS for NT will not impact the traffic generated between domains through a trust, but you will notice that the traffic among the domain controllers within the domain will be significantly reduced after NDS for NT is installed. Not a bad side benefit, eh? The traffic is reduced because NDS is much more efficient in its replication model. For example, when an attribute on a user is modified in NDS only the modified attribute is synched, but in contrast, NT synchronizes the entire object, which results in more traffic.
