You left out a piece of information, for which operating system. Regardless, Novell iManager relies on JClient to communicate with the directory. JClient itself is basically a glorified 'JNI' connector that communicates with the local (on the same node) DClient implementation. Therefore, yes, Novell iManager requires some eDirectory pieces to be installed on the machine.
On NetWare, it requires eDirectory, period.
On Windows, it requires the standalone JClient libraries (delivered and linked during the install).
On Linux and UNIX, it requires the NDSbase package (delivered during install).
