Installing NSBS 5.1 vs. Standalone NetWare

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
How hard is it to install NSBS versus regular NetWare?

A:
Depends on your experience level. You still have to choose a name for your domain, post office, etc. For a new administrator with no idea of how Novell uses PO and Domain names and such, it's easy to make bad decisions. It might also drive you nuts if you have any hardware conflicts. We heard from one customer with a RAID card/drive/motherboard combo that refused to boot from the raid array. They went nuts trying to fix it and finally gave in to booting off the floppy. They said it worked great, and mentioned that "since Novell is so stable, we've never had to reboot except when we do a major Service Pack, or when we added more ram. Love it compared to the old MS network we had."

In the SBS install it's a 'two parter'. You do the normal install on the server, then when you first log in from a workstation as Admin, you complete the deal there.

The install is pretty much a Windows 9x 'cookbook' install, so if you have any experience with Windows, you should find it pretty straightforward.

For more information about installation, see Installation and Setup in the documentation.
