IP Addresses for BorderManager

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
I'm a little confused about IP addresses for BorderManager. The example of the DSL configuration in the SBS5.1 manual shows a DSL Modem with a Dynamic IP address from an ISP and a static address. Where does that static address come from, and how is it implemented? Is this something that is put in during NIAS? Also, the assigned static IP address of the server - same question. Our ISP (Verizon) apparently is not giving out static IP addresses. What to do?

A:
DSL modems just connect to a network card in the server. They don't have drivers for the OS. The thing to be concerned with is whether your ISP requires PPPoE to use their network. NetWare doesn't support PPPoE at this time. If they do, you can pick up a Linksys or Netgear DSL router pretty cheaply.
