I have never installed much less upgraded Novell before (I come from the NT side). My question is: Where so I start?More importantly, what would be the best path to take. Unfortunately our current server lacks the hard drive space for an upgrade. I read the requirements are at leat 2 gig free on the SYS volume? When the server was set up originally the SYS volume was set at 1 gig. Not much free space left. Our current server has 2 9 gig software mirrored drives with: SYS: 1 gig
VOL1: 6.5 gig
CACHE: 600 mb
and a DOS partition The new server has 3 9 gig drives with a hardware raid controller. I am lost as to where to start. Do I move the current server to the newone and then upgrade? If so how do I go about it? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Chris, Interesting situation! We recommend that you do the following:

First, migrate your current server data onto your new hardware. You cando this by using the standard NetWare Migration Wizard tool. You willfind step-by-step information on how to download and use MigrationWizard at http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/migwiz6/index.html.Migration Wizard will both migrate your data and install NSBS 6 foryou.

Next, install NSBS 6 onto the old hardware using the second serverlicense. During installation, you can repartition your hard drives togive you more space in your sys: volume. Installing the second serveris easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Insert the NSBS 6 software CD and select Advanced Install. Theinstall program will automatically install the NetWare 6 baselineoperating system, all NSBS software components and eDirectory.NOTE: Youmust install the second server into the existing directory tree, thatis, the tree that you created when you installed the first server.
  2. Insert the license diskette. The Advanced Install program will installthe second server license.Note: The Advanced Install program willdisplay a notification indicating that it has installed the secondserver license but has not installed any additional client licenses.
  3. Select to install those Net services that you wish to run on thesecond server.
  4. Install any additional products that you want torun on the second server from the NSBS 6 software CD. Install eachproduct according to the installation instructions for that productincluded in the NSBS 6 documentation CD.
