Setting the VPN timeout value

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
I have installed VPN client 3.8. If I am not working online or if I walk away for a while, the VPN connection drops and I have to dial in again. The strange thing is that if I have a constant ping to the internal server (BorderManager), then the connection seems to hang on for a little longer.

A:
Do you have NBM VPN set with an idle timeout value? In the Client-Site VPN configuration. If you haven't changed it, you should be set to a 15-minute idle timeout, and you can see that in the VPN client stats when you connect. See what time is allowed, and what it resets to after you send some data across the VPN. If you keep "ping" up, it should also keep the connection up indefinitely.

You may also have to create a new key. Here's what it would look like:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\VPN\Current]
  "IKE NAT KeepAlive Time"=dword:0000001e
