DirXML and rights to Web resources

Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Q:
When a user logs into our network via client32, we would like that user to be able to open upInternet Explorer and get to our intranet website. From there, the user's login information could be used to display reports designed just for that user. Is there a way to collect the user information and pass it to our intranet website so it validates who the user is and then displays information that only that user has rights to view?

A:
I don't think DirXML is really what you want for this task. Its purpose in life is to sync data between directories and databases. What you describe is what iChain does ... it's a fancy reverse-proxy server that sits between the browsers and the Web servers. You can set up access rules that only allow certain users to certain Web resources, etc. DirXML is often used *with* iChain to sync a production tree with the ichain authentication tree, but that is not absolutely necessary.
