Calendar Printing: The Saga Continues
Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer

Karen R. writes: Help! A few months ago when we upgraded to GW 5.2 and found out that we couldn't print monthly calendars without truncating the text, I promised all of our users that this would be corrected in GW 5.5. Well, we are now running on 5.5 and the text is still not wrapping. Any solutions?
Cindy H. writes: We are upgrading from GroupWise 4.1 to 5.5. The only monthly calendar print I can find is the Franklin Quest format. What happened to the GroupWise version of the monthly calendar - the version without the 'holes' on the top of the page?
A:
Well, OK, we're duly embarrassed about the lack of word wrap in 5.5 calendar printing. And certainly the month is a popular unit for
calendars. I know all my wall calendars have been organized that way
for years! So, you might ask, what's the deal here? Here's the deal!
GroupWise 5 Print Pack to the Rescue!
Very shortly after the release of 5.5 (meaning right now, December, 1998), we've released the GroupWise 5 Print Pack. It's free. It's for all GroupWise 5.2.2 through 5.2.4 and GroupWise 5.5 users. And you can download it right now from http://www.novell.com/download/#GroupWise. The print developers have labored valiantly to juggle competing, and sometimes mutually exclusive, objectives while designing new and improved calendar print forms for you. Not only will the Print Pack make Karen and Cindy happy, it should make a lot of other folks happy as well. Take a look!
Wrapped in Comfort
This one's for you, Karen! After you install the Print Pack, all week, month, and multi-user day print forms will wrap your text like they should have all along. If there's so much for a given day that it won't fit into that day's box on any form, the overflow text prints on the next page. And, yes, it wraps there, too!
On a Roll
Cindy, here's yours! After you install the Print Pack, you will be able to print a "rolling" month GroupWise calendar. It starts with the current week and prints the next three weeks, rolling right past those pesky month boundaries. I don't know about you, but I live my life in week-sized chunks. I hate it when I can't see what's coming at me around the corner of the next month.
Face Lift
After you install the Print Pack, deciding which calendar form to print couldn't be easier. Just click File > Print Calendar > and go for it!
First there's the Form tab. Pick the form type (day, week, month, whatever), your favorite form for that type, the form size (your printer is the only limit), and the form orientation (you know, portrait or landscape). Look, Cindy, there's your GroupWise month form!
Click the Content tab to pick the kinds of GroupWise calendar information you want printed in your selected calendar form.
Finally, if you really feel the need, click the Options tab to see what other aspects of your calendar printing you can customize.
Week Forms no Longer Weak
For those of you who live life in week-sized chunks (like me), the Print Pack offers three new week forms:
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
| Multi-Week Calendar | Two Page Week Calendar | Week Tri-fold Calendar |
Hmmm... That Multi-Week Calendar looks suspiciously like Cindy's Rolling Month Calendar. Oh, well... What's in a name...)
Just Your Size
Remember when we talked about picking your form size? Well, once you install the Print Pack, you really can specify any size you want, right down to millimeters or hundredths of an inch. Just click that Custom button in the Form tab and specify your width and height. (Well, your form's width and height, actually...) Want to carry your printed calendar around with you in your shirt pocket? You can print it to fit any shirt pocket you have! Want your printed calendar to fit in your planner? Now you can print it to fit just right into any planner, not just the famous name brands (which we won't mention here).
Ecologically Minded?
If you want to kill fewer trees by using fewer sheets of paper, you can now print your calendar on both sides of the same sheet of paper right from the GroupWise Print Calendar dialog box. Now you no longer have to click Print Setup > Properties > and set your printer's duplexing options. Just click Options > Print on Both Sides of Page from the Print Calendar dialog box. (Obviously, this only works if your printer is physically capable of duplexing. We can't endow your plain old XYZ printer with magical super powers. Sorry...)
Ready to Go for It?
Now that you're enlightened to the many benefits of the GroupWise 5 Print Pack, go get it right now. It's really easy!
- Click http://www.novell.com/download/#GroupWise to download the zipped up GW5PRINT.EXE file from the web. You'll be guided through what you need to do.
- Run GW5PRINT.EXE to unzip the Print Pack files. Check out the README if you like details, but the important part is:
- Run PRINTPAK.EXE to install the Print Pack to the directory where GroupWise is already installed.
- Have fun printing calendars in more shapes and sizes than you ever thought possible before!
Where Do We Go from Here?
