Receive Messages Automatically while in Caching Mode

We ran into a problem where several Groupwise 6.5 clients in caching mode were unable to receive messages automatically. They were only able to receive email when hitting send/retrieve.

I worked on several solutions including looking at TID

This TID indicates that the Post office actually communicates to the client via UDP to let it know when new messages have arrived. Not so in caching mode. In caching mode the client actually has to initiate the communication to pull new messages down to the cached mailbox. I found that my users had inadvertently unchecked the Auto Send/Retrieve option under tools in the client.

Once I enabled that option all the problems were taken care of. I never thought it was a big deal as I force a check every 5 minutes through the Post office properties but that seems to have no effect if the client is not configured to automatically check for new messages.

So the moral of the story is caching mode does not share many of the characteristics of online mode and some of your domain settings may not apply.
